Anne O. Stoops

Anne Wilkins Odum Stoops, 75, of Oakwood, died peacefully on Wednesday, June 21, 2017 at Heartland of Kettering, following a hemorrhagic stroke. She was born on May 2, 1942 in Washington D.C. to the late Bardwell and Mildred (Cocke) Odum. Also preceding her in death is her brother, David Odum. Anne is survived by her loving husband of 52 years, Glenn A. Stoops; children, Carole E. (Jay) Furr of Richmond VT and Glenn B. Stoops of Astoria, Queens NY; siblings, Charles (Gloria) Odum, Lewisville TX, Margaret (Wayne) Frindell, San Antonio TX and Jeanne Cain, Coppell TX; siblings-in-law, Ann (Ron) Thomas, Tempe AZ, Harry (Debby) Stoops, Chestertown NY and Paul (Cher) Stoops, Hailey ID; many nieces and great-nieces, nephews and great-nephews, and special friends Virginia “Ginger” Rogers and Janice Price.
Anne was a loyal daughter of Texas with roots going back 200 years, but she was born in DC. She grew up all over while her father followed the needs of J. Edgar Hoover throughout the country, but she made it back to Texas to attend Richardson High School. She was a high school slide rule champion in Texas. After two years studying math at Rice University, she somehow sensed there was a dangerous grad student arriving from the North, and switched majors, graduating in German and Spanish. A year later, she married the guy anyway. She taught for two years in Texas before following Glenn to Syracuse and then California, where Glenn B. and Carole were born. They moved to the Dayton area in 1975. Although Anne loved being a full-time mother, she eventually resumed substitute teaching and, more critically, math tutoring. She inspired dozens of students-in-need over the years. She was a tiger at the bridge table, and also with the tax tables, guiding many clients through IRS reporting and the intricate (legal) tricks of the trade.
Friends and family may visit from 10 AM-12 PM on Friday, June 30 at Christ United Methodist Church, Kettering, followed by a funeral service beginning at 12:00 PM. Anne will then be laid to rest in Woodland Cemetery, near her heroes Wilbur and Orville Wright. In lieu of flowers, we request donations to the Engineers Club of Dayton.
