Carol graduated from Julienne High School in 1956 and the University of Dayton in 1960. At UD she was a Flyerette, serving as President in her Senior year. She and Tom married in 1960.
She was a quiet strong leader, a woman of strong faith who gave strong hugs. Her life’s work was her family, raising her children and supporting Tom. Her fulltime hobby was volunteering. She was instrumental in compiling the first ever student directories for St. Albert the Great School and Alter High School. She was a Girl Scout Leader, and served as President of the Parish Council at St Albert the Great. She helped create the St. Vincent meals for the homeless at St. Albert, and then managed the program with Tom for years. She was an integral part of Christ Child Society of Dayton for decades and served as President. She was honored as the Grand Marshal for the 1998 Kettering Holiday at Home Parade with the theme being “Hometown Heroes.”
Carol was a branch manager for Dayton Daily News; she mentored and loved numerous paper carriers for about a decade. She kept her kitchen light on 24/7 which could be seen from the street because “someone might need help.” She was a community builder: initiating and/or organizing gatherings, block parties, meetings, parents’ clubs (Alter and U.D.), family reunions, parish parties, service activities and Lake Association meetings at LaCloche in Ontario. She and Tom hosted many of these gatherings at their home.
Her specialty was welcoming newcomers, making them feel included, and inviting them to take leadership in something. Her ever-present smile communicated warmth and welcome. Carol often displayed a playful, adventurous spirit and a good sense of humor. She had a gentle, calm way of moving through challenges and difficulties - always anchored in prayer and trust in God. She was a good listener and people found it easy to trust her. Her family and friends will miss her deeply.
