Janning, Charles W.
Age 85, of New Carlisle, passed away peacefully at his home on December 9, 2021.
He was born in Dayton, OH on April 15, 1936 to William and Eva (Webb) Janning. He developed early on a love for model trains and classical music and assisted his father in building numerous houses around south Dayton. He would later build his own residence in New Carlisle and a vacation house at Indian Lake.
Charles attended grade school at Holy Angels, St. Anthony’s and St. Albert’s Catholic Churches. He was a member of the class of 1954 at Chaminade High School, where he played on some of the state’s best high school football teams of the day and earned All-City honors as a defensive tackle. From 1954-58 he studied Government at Harvard University, traveling between Ohio and Cambridge either by rail or on interminable automobile rides on the pre-interstate highway system. He competed in the weight throw on the college track team.
Back in Dayton after his freshman year at college, he met his future wife, Carole Suzanne Stangle, at the original Cassano’s Pizza store on Schantz Avenue in Kettering. Charles and Carole married immediately after his graduation from college, on June 28, 1958, in a double ring ceremony with Carole’s sister Miriam and Leonard Pytel, a classmate and teammate of Charles.
After obtaining a law degree at the Western Reserve University in 1961, he joined the Federal Bureau of Investigation where he served in the Charlotte, NC and Philadelphia, PA field offices. In 1964 he returned to Dayton where he accepted a position in contracting at Aeronautical Systems Division (ASD) in the Air Force Systems Command at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. At ASD, he was a contract officer in the Short Range Attack Missile and C-5 Systems Program Offices. In 1977 he joined the contracts committee at Air Force Logistics Command (later Air Force Materiel Command). For seventeen years he provided advice and counsel as a procurement analyst on the AFLC and AFMC review committee staffs. He played a crucial role in enforcing the Federal Acquisition Regulations in numerous programs, including Joint STARS and C-17.
After retiring from the Civil Service in 1994, he volunteered his legal services to Miami County and served on the board of directors of Child Care Choices, a local charity. Charles was a long-time patron of Dayton Opera and classical music radio. He spent many happy weekends at Indian Lake, enjoying time with family and constantly expanding his model railroad.
He is preceded in death by his parents, sisters Patricia Girard and Joan Armstrong and brothers-in-law Robert Girard, Samuel Armstrong, and Robert Strasser. He is survived by wife Carole, daughters Cathryn Fortunato (Mark Alexander) and Melissa Clark (Pat), son Dan Janning (Rachelle), sister Mary Strasser, brother William Janning (Robin), grandchildren Christina, Anthony, Jennifer, Gina, Patrick, Leigh Anne, Kathleen, William, and Anna, and four great-grandchildren.
