John (Jack) Clemens Schmitz, 77, of Centerville passed away peacefully February 3, 2013, after a courageous battle with cancer.
He was born to the late Clemens and Hilda Schmitz, June 11, 1935, in Dayton, Oh. At the time, he was the youngest person in Dayton to receive the Eagle Scout award. Jack graduated from Chaminade High School in 1953 and from the University of Dayton in 1957. Jack is survived by Cecilia (Matta), his high school sweetheart and wife of 56 years. His marriage and children were the pride of his life. Jack was in the printing industry for 30 years at McCall Corp. After that, he began a second career in the insurance industry. He loved traveling, gardening, the UD Flyers, Notre Dame and Buckeye football, church fish fries, Bill's Donuts, fishing with his beloved grandchildren, the occasional trip to "The Boat", and.....the Bee Gees. He was a man of great integrity and compassion. Devotion to his family and friends was his top priority in life, and his greatest joy. Jack had a fantastic sense of humor and was quick to laugh. He was known to cut a rug if the music was right. He was a man you could always count on.Jack is survived by seven children: Stephen (Leigh) of Coconut Creek, FL; Anne Strand of Mt. Pleasant, SC; Michael (Paula), Daniel (Francine), Anthony (Denise), and John Jr. all of Ohio; Amy Andrus (Derek) of Portland, OR. He also is survived by eight grandchildren: Michael, David (Ann Marie), Lauren, Evan, Kyle, Connor, Tyler and Finnegan, and two great-grandchildren: Kaarina and Michael. Jack is also survived by his sister-in-law, Wilma Matta of Edwardsville, IL; nephew John, nieces Jane (Tom) and Anne, and six great-nieces and nephews.
A visitation will be held at 12:30 p.m. Friday, February 8, at St. Leonard's Church on Clyo Road in Centerville with Mass to follow at 1:30pm.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Hospice of Dayton.
