Powell, David Thomas, age 51, of Centerville, Ohio, passed away Wednesday, May 5, 2021. His entire life he was an example of an exceptional leader with a passion and ambition to do good.
David retired after proudly serving in the Army as a Noncommissioned Officer for 9 years and an Infantry Officer for 12 years. He was awarded three Bronze Stars, including one for Valor, as well as the Purple Heart. His major deployments include: Desert Storm, Hurricane Andrew, Joint Endeavor and OEF/OIF twice. Some of David’s assignments were the 3rd Ranger Battalion, 82nd Airborne Division, Southern European Task Force (Italy) and 1st Calvary Division. He attended Airborne School, Officer Candidate School, Basic and Advanced Infantry Officer Courses, Pathfinder School, SERE Course (Germany) and Sniper School.
Prior to active duty, David attended college at California State Fullerton and was one of the founding fathers of the Zeta Rho Chapter of Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity. Since 1989, over a thousand young men have been required to know the name David T. Powell #25.
He is preceded in death by his mother, Joan Reed. He is survived by his wife, Melinda; his father, Paul (Kaye); children Alyssa Powell and Hazen Powell; uncle Pete (Susie); sister Tammie; brothers Stephen, Will (Jenneth), Jeff (Maria); nieces and nephews Grace, Faith, Brekken, Reid, Axel, Killian, Ila, Trevor, Jared, Gabe, Matthew.
Services will be held 12:00 p.m. Friday, May 21 at the Westbrock Funeral Home, 5980 Bigger Rd., Kettering, Ohio. The family will receive friends from 10:00-12:00 p.m. prior to the services on Friday. David will be buried with honors at Arlington Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The Michael J. Fox Foundation or Wounded Warrior Project. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
