Dorothy "Dottie" Hollenkamp

HOLLENKAMP, DOROTHY “Dottie” ANN (nee Beck), age 82 of Centerville, Ohio passed away on Saturday, April 2, 2022 due to a rare reaction to medication during her recovery from otherwise successful cancer treatment. Missed deeply by all who knew her, Dottie was preceded in death by her parents Herbert Leo Beck and Mary Emma Beck (nee Jones) of Cincinnati, her brother-in-law Wendel J. Maegley, and her ex-husband, Nicholas Charles Hollenkamp. Dottie is survived by the 5 children from her marriage: Anne (Jeff) Fehrman, Nicholas C., Jr (Natalie, nee Wilson) Hollenkamp, M.D., Bill Hollenkamp, Mary Frances (Rob) Kramer, and Carol Hollenkamp; her 13 grandchildren: Jacob, Nicholas III, Nicole, Kate, Sarah, Joe, Hannah, Eric, Caroline, Abby, Karina, Sean and Tom; and her 2 sisters: Mary (AJ) Moebius (nee Beck) and Marilyn (Harv Self) Maegley (nee Beck). She also had two previous daughters-in-law Kim (nee Koch) and Cathleen (nee Beatty).

Dottie Hollenkamp was born and raised in Cincinnati where she attended Seton Catholic High School and Good Samaritan School of Nursing. As a young nurse at Good Sam Hospital, she met and married Nick Hollenkamp who was a law student at the University of Cincinnati. They moved to Dayton upon Nick’s graduation and soon settled down in Centerville, where Dottie embraced the busy life of an active wife, mother, and community member. Dottie made close, lifelong friendships in both Cincinnati and Dayton and was active in various social and charitable groups throughout her life.

In her early motherhood years, she enjoyed weekly coffee klatches with other young mothers in the neighborhood, going dancing with her husband and their friends, playing bridge, hosting an annual Kentucky Derby Party, participating in the Christ Child Society and the elementary school PTO (where she had at least one child in attendance for 17 years), and the like. As her children got older, she became very active in the Centerville soccer community. She formed an especially close bond with a small group of other moms whose sons, like hers, were inaugural players on the area’s first set of travel soccer teams, known then as the Centerville Galaxies. Those moms grew close as the boys spent years playing together across the country and into Canada as well as at Centerville High School. Much of what seems common to us today as sports parents was a new frontier in the early days, and she and the other moms jumped in and figured it out together. To this day, they remain dear to each other and are actively involved in each other’s lives. In the early 80’s, Dottie returned to her nursing profession and spent 25 more years as a registered nurse in the specialty clinics at Dayton Children’s Hospital, most notably in genetics with her beloved PKU families as well as in endocrinology and the Care Clinic.

After retirement, Dottie continued her active life with family, friends, and community. She regularly got together for meals and outings with people from all stages of her life. She also enjoyed the quiet time she spent reading her daily newspaper and her novels, watching the nightly news and Jeopardy, and keeping up with the world on various apps on her iPad and iPhone. She is an inspiration and a role model to all who knew her for many reasons, just a few of which are her kindness, her diplomacy, her integrity, her strength of character, her optimism and love of life, and her interest in others’ happiness.

Visitation and Mass of Christian Burial for Dottie will both be held Tuesday, April 19, 2022 at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Parish in Kettering, Ohio. Visitation is at 10am with Mass at 11am. Immediately following, there will be prayers at Calvary Cemetery and a reception in celebration of her life at Rumbleseat Wine in Centerville.
