Mrs. Sabatinos played the recorder in a small ensemble and sang for many years in the church choir. She had a beautiful soprano voice. She loved gardening, bird watching, hiking and camping with her family. Elizabeth made delicious fruit preserves from the produce of the family garden and wrote hand-written notes to family and friends far and wide. She had a gift for sewing and made tailored dresses, shirts and suits for her family. She was kind and compassionate to people and animals alike. She excelled in math and won a scholarship to study math after high school but chose instead to marry Lawrence and accompany him in his many adventures and projects. Later, after all four of her children were in school, she worked for many years at Virginia Tech, first as a secretary-bookkeeper for the Department of Business Administration and then as office administrator and accountant for the School of Forestry and Wildlife Resources before retiring to take care of her husband in his years of declining health. Elizabeth helped map numerous caves in the Southeast in the early years of their marriage and was an active member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Blacksburg, VA. Part of her ministry was to be a companion and give Holy Communion to shut-ins and those who lived in long-term care facilities.
