VANCE, Ethel, I. (neé Stefanics), age 92, of Dayton, passed away on Thursday August 27, 2015. She was born February 14, 1923 in Leechburg, PA and grew up in Vandergrift, PA.

She is preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, George.

She is survived by her sisters, Charlotte Stefanics and Mary Somogy and her brother Jesse (Mary Louise) Stefanics; sister-in-law, Theresa Peterson; daughters Mary Vance, Karen (Dennis White) Vance and Linda Vance and son Thomas Vance. She is also survived by various cousins, nieces and nephews.

Ethel proudly served in WWII from 1944 – 1946 in the 5th Army at Fort Knox, the Women’s Army Corps Detachment in the 3rd Army under General Patton as an x-ray technician in the General Hospital in France and Germany with the rank of Tech 5 and the Army of Occupation in Germany as a Hungarian translator. She is a charter member of the Women’s Memorial in Washington, DC.

After the war, Ethel attended the University of Dayton and the University of Kansas in Lawrence, KS where she graduated as a physical therapist. Over the years, she worked at several hospitals and nursing homes in the Dayton area. She later returned to the University of Dayton and earned a Master of Humanities in Philosophy degree.

The family would like to thank the staff of Brighton Gardens and Hospice of Dayton.

Family and friends may call at Westbrock Funeral Home at 1712 Wayne Ave, Dayton, OH on Monday, August, 31, 2015 from 4:00 to 8:00 pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be Tuesday, September 1, 2015 at 10:00 am at Holy Angels Church at 1322 Brown St, Dayton OH followed by burial at Calvary Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to the Salvation Army or Hospice of Dayton in Ethel’s name.
