Lewis, George, died on May 7, 2015, at Bethany Lutheran Village in Centerville, Ohio, age 90. He is survived by wife Ruth Marling Lewis, sons David (wife Maureen McSharry, sons Ian and Conrad) of Mountain Lakes, NJ; Robert (Laura Thomas) of Appleton, WI; daughter Carol E. Watwood (husband Daryl, children Catherine, Sarah and Andrew) of Franklin, KY, sister in law Margaret (Peg) Lewis (children Tom and Mary); sister in law Carol Marling Wright (daughters Toni and Lisa) among other extended family in the US and Canada.. George and Ruth enjoyed over 61 years of marriage. Preceded in death by parents Harry M. and Clara (nee Baker) Lewis; and brother James M. Lewis.

George was born in Kansas City, MO and grew up in Norwood, Ohio, graduating from Norwood High School in 1942 and starting college at University of Cincinnati. He served his country in WWII, volunteering for the United States Army Air Force in 1942, completing training in San Antonio and Stamford, TX, piloting the PT-19 trainer before being transferred to the Army Airways Communication System (AACS). After arrival in Casablanca, French Morocco, George trained as a cryptographer in Accra, Ghana, before being stationed at a remote desert airbase in Atar, Mauritania, 1943-1945. In 1946, he transferred from UC to Ohio State University, completing his PhD in Chemical Engineering in 1950.

While working for DuPont in Old Hickory, TN, friends introduced George and Ruth and they were married by Ruth’s father, Rev. Maurice Marling, July 10, 1954 in Jasper, Alabama.

George moved to Mead Corporation’s research division in Chillicothe, Ohio, retiring in 1987 as Technical Director of Mead Paperboard Products, Dayton, OH.

George and Ruth shared a passion for travel, traveling throughout the United States, Canada, Europe, Asia, Australia, New Zealand and over 20 trips to Hawaii, especially Kailua Kona. George was an accomplished family historian, completing a detailed Lewis family tree to the 1700s, an autobiography, and several biographies of family members, all with an engineer’s eye for detail. At the time of his death he was working on Ruth’s biography, and an updated autobiography.

George will always be remembered for his friendly, outgoing nature; his positive outlook on life, and interest in getting to know people from many cultures and walks of life.

George will be sadly missed by his family and his many friends and business colleagues.
