Schenking, Gerald J. (Jerry), age 83, died peacefully of complications from acute myeloid leukemia on February 20, 2017, at Hospice of Dayton. Born in Dayton on August 7, 1933, Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Othilia (Homan) Schenking and his siblings and their spouses, Don (Martha) Schenking, Wilbert (Elinor) Schenking, Adeline (Dick) Long and Bobby Schenking. He is survived by his sister Mariann (Hugh) Becker and many nieces, nephews, and friends. He attended Our Lady of Mercy elementary school, and graduated from Chaminade High School (1950) and the University of Detroit (1955). Jerry enjoyed the summer he studied French at Universite Laval in Quebec City. He considered service as an Air Force pilot and as a Precious Blood priest (studying at St. Joseph College in Rensselaer, IN) but found satisfaction as an accountant for Dayton Tire and Rubber, Dayco and Day International. A member of the Liederkranz Turner club, he was a member of it singing and dancing groups, its treasurer for 40 years, and a vital part of the club’s annual German Picnic. He was an important part of Dayton’s World A’Fair, serving as president and treasurer, and during his lifetime was involved in many other organizations. A man of deep faith, he was a loyal and committed member of Holy Trinity Church. His major passion was traveling the globe with his family and friends, visiting every continent but Antarctica. Jerry will be remembered for his generosity, support and love for his family and friends. His family will receive friends from 5-7 PM, Friday, February 24 at Westbrock Funeral Home, 1712 Wayne Avenue, Dayton, 45410. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 AM on Saturday, February 25 at Holy Trinity Church, 272 Bainbridge Street, Dayton, 45402. Interment will follow the Mass at Calvary Cemetery.
