AFANADOR-SGRO, GLORIA joined the choir of angels on June 20, 2014. Born October 18, 1925 in Shamokin, PA where she graduated from Saint Edwards High School. Gloria’s passion to serve led her to Philadelphia where she graduated from Saint Mary’s Hospital School of Nursing in 1946. It was there that she a WWII sailor from Indiana, Carlos P. Afanador and they married in 1947. They started their family in Indiana and eventually settled in Centerville, OH. Her undeniable kindness touched so many through her faith, singing & sewing, to her family, church and community. Her beautiful voice was heard around the house, at Sunday Mass, and countless wedding and funerals. She sewed many dresses & costumes for proms, weddings, Civic groups & plays culminating with the canvas seams on the replica of the Wright Flyer plane that hangs in the Wright State University Library. She is preceded in death by her husband, Carlos; daughter, Annette; mother, Mary; father, Nicholas; sisters: Barbie, Dot & Helen; brothers: Joe & Charlie. Gloria is survived by her brother, Albert; children: Carol, Craig, Lisa (Jim), Tina, Brian & David; grandchildren: Melissa (Rajon), Jessie (Kip), Leah (Abe), Joey (Buffy), Jason (Brittney), Danielle, Rick, Katie, Monica, Andrea, Joe, Michael & Mary; great-grandchildren: Noah, Arie, Aubrey, Ayla, Elise, Alee, Isaac, Annalee, Mason, Cannon & Matias. The Afanador’s would like to thank all of our friends and extended family. Our Hester sisters, the teams from Senior Independence Hospice, St. Leonard’s DayAway, Dr. Merryman, Dr. Paulus, the Pharmacist’s at Walgreen’s and all those who assisted us through this journey. Please know that in some way you have all helped us carry Mom home. Visitation will be held Monday, June 23rd from 4:00-8:00 p.m . at Westbrock Funeral Home, 5980 Bigger Rd., Kettering and again Tuesday, June 24th from 9:30 a.m. until time of Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. at St. Charles Borromeo Church, 4500 Ackerman Blvd., Kettering. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery.
