Hugh Smith

SMITH, Hugh M. age 90, a native Daytonian, passed away Monday November 16, 2009. He graduated from Chaminade High School and the University of Dayton where he earned a degree in Civil Engineering. In the early 1940s he was involved in construction of the first concrete runways at Wright Field, now WPAFB. During WWII he was an officer with the Army Air Corps, 482 Bomb Group, 8th Air Force at Alconbury, England. He was with Butt Construction Company for 32 years until he retired as president of the company in 1987. With Butt Construction Company he was involved in many construction projects at WPAFB such as a large addition to the Avionics Lab, the New Materials Lab, and many other projects such as the Caesar Creek Dam and the main Post Office in Dayton. He is a past member of the Dayton Rotary Club, American Society of Civil Engineers, and a 50-year member of the Engineers Club of Dayton. He was also active in the Dayton Community as a past member of parochial school boards. He was preceded in death by his parents, Earl and Cecilia Smith, his loving wife of 58 years, Sarah (Leen), one grandson, John C. Babcock, and two brothers, R. Kenneth Smith, and Robert E. Smith. He leaves three daughters, Carolyn (Jim) McIntire, Teresa (Craig) Babcock, Patty (Kevin) McKenna; five sons, Ed (Kathie) Smith, Greg (Kathy) Smith, Don (Liz) Smith, Rob (Sue) Smith, Dave (Melissa) Smith; 28 grandchildren, Jeff and Jessika Smith, Melissa and Tim Bowser, Regina and Shane Joiner, Christina and Daniel Winters, Katrina and Cory Critchley, Adina and Kevin Williams , Gregory and Benjamin Smith, Jason and Cindy Smith, Adele Smith, Mike and Kendra Smith, Josh and Alicia, John and Lindsay, Sarah and Anne McIntire, Emily, Julia and Nick Smith, Chris, Patricia and Stephen Babcock, Allison, Katherine and Andrew Smith, Maggie, Patrick, Mary Clair and Daniel McKenna; 11 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Dorothy Sigman and Jeanne McEwan; three brothers, Thomas A. (Marilou) Smith, James H. (Gloria) Smith, Lawrence V. (Mary Lou) Smith; a sister-in-law, Hortense Smith; a brother-in-law, Arthur E. Leen; and numerous nieces, nephews and other family and friends. He was an avid tennis player for years at Nichols Tennis Center and Quail Run Racquet Club. He was also an avid golfer. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 4-8pm at The Westbrock Funeral Home, 5980 Bigger Road. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00am Thursday at Incarnation Church in Centerville. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery. The family asks that those wishing to make contributions in lieu of flowers contribute to the University of Dayton. Mr Smith was a loving husband, and a fun loving father and grandfather to all of his children, grandkids and great-greatkids and will be missed by all of them.
