Irene Elizabeth Hartings, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and friend, of Athens, Ohio, passed away Thursday, February 16, 2017 at age 94 from pneumonia. Born June 7th, 1922, in Dayton, Ohio to the late Michael and Mary Elizabeth (Bodogan) Karpiak. Irene is survived by children Michael (Patty) Hartings, Constance (Milt) Gabbard, and Mark (Joanne) Hartings; sons-in-laws Eric Zurbuchen and Eric Gabbard; grandchildren Elizabeth McCune, Heather (Steve) Zurbuchen, Jayson (Keri) Hartings, Maceo Gabbard, Lisa (Burt) Cox, Agatha (Tommy) Gabbard and Victor Hartings; great-grandchildren Gage McCune, Olivia McCune, Trinidad Speck-Almanzar and Izanna Speck-Almanzar; sister-in-law Dolores “Dee” Karpiak, nieces Kim (Doug) Lindley, Sharon Charbat, Deanna (Steve) Rasso and Deborah (Drew) Gabriel, nephew Michael G. Karpiak and many friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Conrad Hartings, daughter, Rene Zurbuchen, and brother, Michael Karpiak, who proceeded her in death by seven days. Irene was a graduate of Patterson Coop High School. She married Conrad Hartings in 1945 and was a homemaker for Conrad and their four children. Her generous caring spirit led Irene to volunteer at Saint Elizabeth Hospital and in elementary and high schools for many years. She devoutly prayed the rosary and for family and friends every day. Kind, generous of spirit, loving and fun, Irene was deeply loved by all who knew her. A visitation will be held at Jagers Funeral Home in Athens, Ohio Tuesday, February 21st 5-8pm, with a Vigil for the Deceased including memories from the audience at 7pm. A visitation will be held at St. Charles Borromeo Church, Kettering Ohio, at 9:30 am, Thursday February 23rd, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 am. There will be a memorial lunch following the mass at the Presidential Banquet Center in Kettering. Irene will be laid to rest at Calvary Cemetery beside her husband. Memorial donations can be made in lieu of flowers to Saint Jude’s Charity.
