Janet (Brandt) Ogg Applegate

Janet Irene Brandt Ogg Applegate, of Washington Township, OH, born on January 14, 1938, in Rowsburg, Ohio, passed away peacefully on March 26, 2025 at the age of 87 after a courageous battle with Alzheimer's disease.

Janet was preceded in death by her parents, Pearl and Eugene Brandt; her brother, Ronald Brandt; and her first husband, Elmer Elsworth Ogg, Jr.

She is survived by her loving husband, Terry; her daughters Jill Ogg Ferguson (Scott), and Amy Ogg Clayton Stimson (Andrew); her grandchildren, Lily Clayton, Jack Clayton, Alex Stimson, Cameron Ferguson, Maddie Lumley (Jeremy), Gabe Ferguson, and great grandson, Colter Lumley. Janet also leaves behind Terry's children: Kathy Hogenson (Bill), Tony Applegate (Sheila), Dr. David Applegate (Dr. Mary Applegate), and Terrilynn Tennis (Mike), as well as her uncle Robert Johnson (Jean) of Amarillo, TX and brothers-in-law, Robert Smith (Becky) of Kettering, OH, Thomas Smith (Linda) of Zionsville, IN, and Tim Applegate (Pat) of Columbus, OH. Janet's family meant the world to her, and she will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

A graduate of Ashland high School, class of 1956, Janet went on to earn her Bachelors of Science degree in education from Miami University in Oxford, OH in 1960, where she was a proud member of the Alpha Omicron Pi sorority. Later, she completed her masters degree in education from Wright State University in Dayton, OH.

For many years, Janet was an active member in the Dayton Area AOII alumni chapter and Dayton panhellenic.  Janet devoted much of her career to education, spending many years as a beloved fourth-grade teacher at Southdale Elementary School in Kettering, OH.  Known for her gentle demeanor and nurturing presence, she was adored by her students, many of whom fondly remembered her as their favorite teacher.  Her collection of holiday-themed sweaters and costume jewelry became a signature part of her style, adding a touch of joy and warmth to every classroom she entered.  After retiring from teaching, Janet went on to function for many years as a docent at Carillon Park in Dayton, OH.

Outside of her teaching career, Janet cherished the simple pleasures of life, from quiet mornings spent cross-stitching to enjoying card games and board games with loved ones.  Throughout her life, she had a special bond with the family dogs, miniature schnauzers Molly, Nicholas and the Sealyham terrier Katie, who brought her joy and companionship. Janet and her first husband, Elmer, treasured their vacations to Hilton Head Island, where they spent countless hours laughing, playing tennis, and strolling along the beach with family and friends.  After Elmer's passing in 1999, Janet continued to embrace life, traveling around the United States and Europe, enjoying the camaraderie of fellow travelers in elder hostels.

In 2005, through the thoughtful matchmaking of her friends Greg and Beth McAfee, Janet met Terry Applegate, and the two were married in 2007.  Together, they built a beautiful life, sharing their love for live theater, travel, and time spent with their families.  Their adventures took them to England, Hilton Head, Oregon, Texas, and Minnesota, among other places, and their laughter and love filled the hearts of all who knew them.

Janet's faith was also an important part of her life, and she converted to Catholicism later in life, becoming a devoted member of St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church.  It was there that she found a sense of community and spiritual fulfillment.

The family will receive friends for a visitation on Monday, March 31, 2025 from 5-8 pm at Westbrock Funeral Home, 5980 Bigger Rd.
