Age 87 of Kettering, Ohio Prominent Trial Attorney, Judge, Law Director (26 years) and two-term Councilman of City of Kettering, Ohio, passed away Monday, June 1, 2020 at the Suites of Walnut Creek Nursing Home, Kettering Ohio.

Preceded in Death by: Late wife of 33 years Mary A.( McGrath) Adams; Father, Lester Guy Adams; Mother, Anna J. (Keigher) Adams; Sister, Patricia (Adams) Shinavar; Brother-in-law Elsworth Shinavar; Nephew, Robert Shinavar; Niece, Joan Shinavar; two step-sons, Russell, Jr and Victor Fritz.

Survived by his devoted wife of 24 years, Yvette (Sawaya, Fritz) Adams, Kettering, Ohio; his children Kathleen (Robert) Cableck, Kettering, Ohio; Melissa (James, J.D.) Alp, Kettering Ohio; Maureen (Thomas II) Dundon, Columbus, Ohio; Dr. Sheila (Ian) Cummings, Saline, Michigan. Grandchildren: Thomas, Sean and Nicole Dundon; Nicholas and Cheyanne Cummings.
Stepchildren: Cynthia (Alan) Struckman, Centerville, Ohio; Daniel Fritz Centerville, Ohio; Timothy (Margo) Fritz, Sugarcreek, Ohio; Douglas (Sharon) Fritz, Centerville, Ohio; step-daughter-in-law, Diane Fritz; Eight Step grandchildren and three Step great grandchildren.

John was a member of St Francis of Assisi Parish, Centerville, Ohio and former Member of St. Charles Parish, Kettering, Ohio, where he served as an usher for 32 years.

John graduated from Central Catholic High School, Toledo, Ohio; University of Toledo, Juris Doctorate, completed extensive continuing professional education at Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts, John also served in the U.S. Army – Infantry and Legal Officer during the Korean War.

He was also a member of the Dayton, Ohio Bar Association; Ohio Trial Lawyer's Association; National Institute of Municipal Law Officers Association; Ohio Municipal Attorney's Association; Trial Lawyer's of America; Ohio Association of Civil Trial Attorney-Defense Research Institute; International Right of Way Association. He also adjudicated a case to the U.S. Supreme Court and won.

John received numerous awards and recognition for both his professional career and volunteer work including Certifications of Appreciation for Volunteer Work awarded by the City of Kettering Mayor;
Outstanding Municipal Attorney; Outstanding Trial and Appellate Attorney; Elected President of Ohio Municipal Attorney's Association; Award of Merit, Ohio Legal Center Institute.

Among his civic duties, John, was a Director of C.O.D.E Credit Union; A Director and Legal Advisor for various Charitable Foundations; Legal Advisor for “Latch Key Children” non-profit and Kettering “Holiday at Home.”

John was an avid snow skier and skied all 50 U.S. States and other countries. He enjoyed antique cars, cruising the high seas (46 cruises), reading books (almost one every night), Volksmarch- walking and traveling the U.S.A., Europe and Africa. John enjoyed celebrating his Irish heritage and spending winters in Sarasota, Florida with his wife, Yvette.


The family will greet friends from 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM, Tuesday. June 9th at Westbrock Funeral Home, 5980 Bigger Road, Kettering, Ohio 45440. Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11:00 AM at St. Francis of Assisi Parish, 6245 Wilmington Pike, Centerville, Ohio 45459. The service will be live streamed on the St. Francis of Assisi web site – www.sfacc.org . Burial in Calvary Cemetery.
