Juan (John) Mafnas Indalecio

Indalecio, Juan (John) Mafnas, age 79, gardener, grill master, serviceman, volunteer, and family man, passed away peacefully at home on July 22, 2017 surrounded by his loving wife, Marcia, and their children and grandchildren.

John was born February 27, 1938, in Guam to Juan and Ignacia (Mafnas) Indalecio as the youngest boy of eight children. In addition to his parents, John was predeceased by his daughter, Jennifer (1980), and siblings, Antonio, Jose, Francesca, and Mariano Indalecio and Ana Palican.

John was retired from the USAF in 1993, having served eight years active duty and 13 years in the 87th Aerial Port Squadron of the Air Force Reserves. After working at Frigidaire, Delco Air and Harrison Radiator, in 1999 John retired from General Motors where he was known as “Little John.”

John was an engaged member of St. Helen Parish. For many years, he and Marcia were active in Worldwide Marriage Encounter. A core commitment was the St. Vincent DePaul Society, where he took care of the Tuesday morning bread run for the last 16 years and volunteered his services wherever needed. Additionally, John could be found at the grill in the Metts and Brats booth during the annual St. Helen festival. After retirement, John also volunteered as a landscaper at the Five Rivers MetroParks.

John is survived by his wife of 54 years, Marcia (Redrick); children, John (Michael Gilligan) of Brooklyn, Julia (Stephen Sinden) of Cincinnati, and Jeffrey (Licia Leger) of Columbus; grandchildren, Sam, Maya, Benji, Gavin, and Ava; siblings, Julia Aguero of North Carolina and Julita (John) Munoz of Guam. He also leaves behind many dear sisters- and brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Many thanks to the doctors, nurses, and staff at The James Cancer Hospital, Miami Valley Hospital, and Hospice of Dayton.

The family will receive visitors from 5 to 8 PM on Thursday, July 27 at Westbrock Funeral Home, 1712 Wayne Ave., Dayton. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Helen Church will begin at 11 AM on Friday, July 28. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to St. Vincent DePaul Society of St. Helen Parish.
