Larry Colwell, 72 of Dayton, Ohio passed away in his sleep at home on Tuesday afternoon, August 28, 2018. He was born in Trace Branch, Kentucky, on August 25, 1946, to the late George Colwell and Rhoda Collins Colwell. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister and brother in law Pauline and Jake Howard. Survivors are his son Troy Delmas Colwell of Greely, Colorado and his daughter Davita Lynn Mawulawde and her husband Kwabena Mawulawde of Lima, Ohio. Larry has two granddaughters: Hannah Brooke Colwell and Addison Grace Colwell; and a grandson Adofo Colwell Mawulawde. He is also survived by three brothers Hubert Colwell (Ima Jean) of Austin, Indiana, Stokley Colwell (Ann) of Fort Wayne, Indiana, and Lemuel (Patricia) of London, Kentucky; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Larry was a graduate of Buckhorn High School and graduated from Morehead State University in 1968 with a BA in History and Economics. He was a school teacher in Perry county Kentucky, a social worker for the Kentucky Department of Human Resources child welfare division, after which he moved to Dayton, Ohio where he retired from Weiler Welding after 39 years of service.
He was an avid reader and historian who enjoyed stamp and coin collecting. He also enjoyed gardening and daily coffee and bible study with his neighbors.
Viewing will be on Friday, September 7 between 5-8pm and Saturday, September 8 from 10-11am with services beginning at 11am at the Westbrock Funeral Home, 1712 Wayne Avenue, Dayton, Ohio 45410. Interment will be at the Woodland Cemetery, 118 Woodland Avenue, Dayton, Ohio 45410. If desired, memorial contributions may be made to Public Broadcasting System (PBS).
