LEIBOLD, Louis J. age 99, of Centerville, passed away on Monday, September 29, 2014. He was preceded in death by his parents Louis L. and Clara (Kirchner) Leibold and brothers: Richard, Vincent and Urban; wife of 61 years, Helen (nee Wolf) Leibold. Louis was a graduate of Chaminade High School and University of Dayton. He was a veteran of the United States Army serving in the 65th Headquarters Artillery Division during World War II. Louis retired from the State Auditor's Office as Auditor of Schools and Municipalities and was formerly an employee of General Motors Aeroproducts. Louis was a resident of St. Leonard in Centerville since 1995. He was also a member of St. Rita Parish for 66 years. Louis volunteered for St. Vincent de Paul, National Catholic Golden Age, Montgomery County Historical Society, the AARP Income Tax Program and many various volunteer services for the St. Leonard community. Survived by daughters and sons-in-law, Martha and James Schumann of Centerville, Ohio and Ruth and Lyle Barnum of Greenville, Ohio; grandchildren, Katrina (Mark) Caudill, Mark (Susan) Ernst, Beth (Joseph) Smallwood, Carrie (Chris) Clark and Emily Barnum; step-grandchildren, Mark (Teresa) Schumann, Todd (Linda) Schumann, Dave Schumann and families; great-grandchildren, Eva Caudill, Britt Caudill, Caroline Caudill, Lauren Ernst, Kristina Garcia, Christian Elkins, Samuel Smallwood, Elizabeth Smallwood, Anna Clark and Maggie Clark. Louis is also survived by many nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews, cousins and many friends. Louis lived a very active life until his final days. In 2010 he was part of the Saint Leonard Veterans' Service Organization that published a book titled Military Memories Make Amazing Memoirs. In 2011 Louis wrote and published his own autobiographical/historical book titled A Key to the Past; Life Stories of a Veteran which include stories of life in Dayton in the early to mid 20th century. Lou was a wise and gentle man who challenged all with his "think about it" philosophy and led by his example of service to others. He was greatly loved by all who knew him. His spirit will live forever in the hearts and minds of those whose lives he touched during his journey on this earth. Lou's family would like to thank the staff at St. Leonard, Hospice of Dayton and Miami Valley Hospital Burn ICU for their skilled and loving care. Visitation will be held Wednesday, October 1st from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Westbrock Funeral Home, 1712 Wayne Ave., Dayton.
