Philip J. Harwood, 76, of Dayton, OH, passed away February 27, 2015.
He was born March 30, 1938 in Gary, Indiana, to Arthur and Florence Harwood. Phil served in the U.S. Navy and was a graduate of Butler University. He received his Ph.D. from Ohio University in 1972.
Phil spent 38 years as Associate Professor in Communication at the University of Dayton, where he retired in 2004 and was named Professor Emeritus. At UD, he taught courses in broadcasting and communication, served as an academic advisor, helped begin the Department of Communication’s internship program, and successfully got a number of courses incorporated into the curriculum.
After retirement, Phil volunteered his time at many area organizations and enjoyed traveling. He was an avid reader, photographer, and historian.
Preceded in death by his brother John in 2004, Philip is survived by his son, Sean (Dayton, OH) and his daughter, Heather Harwood-Demay, her husband Brian, and their two children, Connor and Darcy (Cumberland, RI).
Services will be held March 7 at 1:00pm and Westbrock Funeral Home, Kettering. Family will receive friends two hours prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to the Dayton Metro Library Foundation, 215 E. Third Street, Dayton, OH 45402.
