Mock, Raymond John, of Centerville, Ohio, passed away April 18th, 2016, at Hospice of Dayton, surrounded by his loving family. Ray was born December 22, 1923 in Dayton, Ohio to Raymond H. and Wilhelmina (Hohm) Mock. Raymond was raised in East Dayton where he attended Holy Family Church and grade school. He is a graduate of Chaminade High School, Class of 1942.Immediately upon graduation he enlisted in the United States Navy, like so many of “The Greatest Generation”. He served proudly aboard the USS Omaha where he participated in combat in both the Atlantic & Mediterranean. After the war, he married the love of his life, Helen Spradling, January 31, 1948. They spent all of the 53 years of their marriage, until her death in 2001, in Dayton, Ohio raising their 7 children. Ray was dedicated to his family, faith and country throughout his life. He served as an altar boy during grade school, high school and aboard ship during WW II. He was a lay minister at Incarnation church for many years. He also delivered communion to the sick homebound, as well as to his fellow veterans at the Dayton VA Center. He was a 4th Degree Knight of Columbus and served as Grand Knight at 4 different K of C Councils, including the one he founded, Council 10215, during his 60 plus years as a Knight. He retired from the career he loved. For more than 40 years he worked at Dayton Sash and Door Company where he grew through various positions, to finally becoming their top producing sales person in the company for over 20 years. Ray always said he loved working with and interacting with people, which was reflected in his top producing sales, and the tremendous respect his associates and competitors had for him. His dedication and commitment to his family was unwavering. Even working many hours to support his large family, he was always there to help coach baseball or football, or be the Boy Scout Troop leader. The family camping trips to Ft. Loramie, Lake St. Mary’s and Lake Erie were legendary. Ray was an avid sports fan and enjoyed watching his Cincinnati Reds, Cincinnati Bengals, OSU Buckeyes and especially Notre Dame. Two of his greatest sports memories are the many years he and Mom attended the opening day of the Cincinnati Reds baseball season and the Notre Dame vs Navy game, when a friend arranged for him to sit on the bench with the Notre Dame team and attend the victory party at Lou Holtz’s Home. His favorite sport to participate in was bowling. He bowled in 2 leagues per week for over 40 years. When his health would not allow him to bowl on the lanes anymore, he learned to Wii Bowl. While in assisted living at St. Leonard, he was instrumental in forming a Wii Bowling league with the other residents. Ray was a very positive and upbeat person, who always saw the good in everyone he met. He was loved by many and will be missed dearly by a great number of friends and family.
