OBRYAN, Robert E. "OBie, OB, Bob" Age 84, of Dayton, passed away peacefully on Friday, June 5, 2009 at Hospice of Dayton, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on July 29, 1924 to William J. and Mildred M. OBryan. OBie was a 1942 graduate of Chaminade High School and was a 4 year starting fullback for legendary football coach Fuzzy Faust, including the undefeated city championship team of 1941. He was chosen as All City player and was inducted into Chaminades 2nd Athletic Hall of Fame class in 1982. OB was a WWII Navy Veteran, serving 1st as a gunnery mate on the battleship USS New York, escorting convoys to Murmansk, Russia and during the battle of Okinawa, was on the USS Carena, which was hit by kamikazies. OBie founded and eventually retired from the R.E. OBryan Company, Inc., a food brokerage company and was a past president of Dayton Food Trade Association. He was a grade school football coach for his sons, and many other players who recall him fondly today. OB (who was CEO), and several friends opened Fishermans Quarters, a fishing tackle store in 1973. He loved to be at his place at Lake Erie to fish with close friends, Paul Moosbrugger, Ed Tolle, and Dick Amann and also traveled each spring to AK or TN, with a fishing caravan known as AFTA (Arkansas Fishing Tournament Association), that included DDN outdoor sports writer Jim Robey and the late Ritter Collett. An avid golfer and long time member of Walnut Grove Country Club, it should be noted that his sons were never able to outshoot him. He enjoyed playing cards and was a huge sports fan. OB was a UD basketball season ticket holder from the Arenas opening through today. He was exceptionally proud of his grandchildren and loved to attend their sporting events and extracurricular activities. He was a past Carroll 53 Booster President, announced the football games for many years, and helped build the stadium and press box. OBie was a past president of the Walden Lakes Condo Assoc. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his beloved wife Donna J.(Hausfeld), and is survived by his daughter Kathy Stahl and favorite (only) son-in-law Mike Stahl of Beavercreek, sons Dan O'Bryan of Beavercreek, Jim (Carol) O'Bryan of Centerville, and Ken (Lori) O'Bryan of Silverthorne, Colorado. Also 8 grandchildren, Donna Hill, Amy Stahl, Mike (Christine) Stahl, Patrick O'Bryan (fianc? Kristen Lunsford), Heather O'Bryan, Kevin O'Bryan, Chris O'Bryan, Sean O'Bryan and 2 great-grandchildren, Kyle Hill and Gabrielle Bereda. He is also survived by is his only brother Bill (Mary Ann) O'Bryan of Kettering, brother-in-law Alan (Ruth) Hausfeld of Manning, South Carolina, sister-in-law Karen Hausfeld of St. Louis, Missouri, many nieces and nephews, and wonderful longtime friends. The ole Irishman will be missed greatly by all those who knew and loved him. Visitation will be on Monday, June 8 from 4-8 p.m. at Westbrock Funeral Home, 5980 Bigger Road. Mass of Christian Burial will be on Tuesday, June 9 at 10:30a.m. Immaculate Conception Church, 2268 S. Smithville Road, preceded by a prayer service 9:45 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial in Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hospice of Dayton, AIM for the Handicapped his memory.
