Griffis, Roy Alvin, age 81, died March 18th after a long struggle with lung cancer. Roy was born November 15th, 1936, in Cincinnati to Frank and Lillian Griffis. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Don and his sister Martha. He is survived by his loving wife and best friend of 59 years, Bonnie Jo, and his children Ned Griffis of Pensacola, Fla., Rebecca Willoughby (Pat) of Bellbrook, Ohio and 5 grandchildren, Chris (Laura), Benjamin, Sara, Tyler (Brooke), and Rachel. He is also survived by his nephews and niece, Don, David, and Dodie. He has a whole different family on his wife’s side, but too many to be named but loved all the same. Roy and Bonnie moved to Kettering in 1961 and consider themselves natives. Roy graduated from the University of Cincinnati with a degree in Electrical Engineering. He was a faithful Bearcat Alumni to the end. He attended graduate school at USC. Roy was one of the early employees at Systems Research Laboratories in Beavercreek and co-founded SRL Medical, Inc. The company was acquired by Gould Inc., and Roy served as President of the Cardiopulmonary Products Division until he semi-retired in 1985. Thereafter he became involved with several area businesses including Saranda, Freund Precision Products, Vastek, MacAulay Brown, and Sytronics. Roy was an avid golfer and a longtime member of Sugar Valley Country Club until health problems forced him to become a spectator. Roy had different names his grandchildren called him. Rest in peace Aupaw and Bapoo. You will be missed. The family will receive friends Friday from 10am-12noon at The Westbrock Funeral Home, 5980 Bigger Road. Funeral Service will be conducted at 12pm at the funeral home. Burial will follow in David’s Cemetery in Kettering. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hospice of Dayton or SICSA.
