Thomas D. "Big" Haberstro

Haberstro, Thomas Derwood, “Big”, age 91, of Centerville, passed away peacefully June 1, 2020 at Hospice of Dayton. A United States Army veteran, Tom served during the Korean War. He attended the University of Dayton and The Ohio State University. Tom had a giant passion for all sports, but watching harness racing was one of his greatest pleasures. He always looked forward to his trips to Lebanon Raceway and Scioto Downs. Tom’s biggest enjoyment, however, was his family. He loved spending time with his children and adored his grandchildren, always writing a made up jingle on every card he sent to them. Tom was preceded in death by his son, Thomas D., in 2009. He is survived by his loving wife, Sue Ann; a daughter, Susan & Shane Hughes of Columbus; a son, Timothy Haberstro; his three grandchildren, Mitchell, Griffin and Katie Hughes; a brother-in-law, Robert “Uncle Bobby” Willis & Jolene; a sister-in-law, Judith Lee and her son, Bill Lee. Tom never met a stranger and will always be remembered for his generosity, determination, and friendliness to everyone. The family would like to thank Sycamore Hospital and Hospice of Dayton for the excellent care he received. A special thank you to everyone at the Dayton VA Medical Center that cared for Tom for many years. His body was donated to Wright State University for medical research. Services will be private.
