FEDER, Virginia H. age 99 of Kettering passed away Sunday October 24, 2010. Virginia was preceded in death by her husband John G. She is survived by a daughter, Elizabeth Gustafson (husband Steve) of Kettering; a son, John H. (wife Cathy); three grandchildren, David, Brian Gustafson and John R. Feder. Raised in Atlanta, Virginia earned her BS at Agnes Scott College, MS at Emory University, and completed her PhD in biochemistry at the U. of Michigan in 1937. She met John on a blind date and married in 1940, 3 months before he was sent to Guam with the Navy. John, as a prisoner of war in Japan, was not to return for 5 years. Her career as a college professor ended when John returned and followed a career as a Navy physician that required frequent moves. For the rest of her life, her considerable talents and energy were used playing leadership roles in most organizations of which she was a part, making a wonderful home for her family, painting, flower arranging, volunteering and giving popular lectures she called book talks. At age 85, she took up golf and got a hole in one. In 2004, after 23 years in Florida, Virginia came to live at One Lincoln Park in Kettering where she was fortunate to make many dear friends. She had dinner and played weekly Scrabble with her children, sometimes winning. Hers was a long and joyful life! Memorial Service 1:00 PM Saturday October 30 at St. George's Episcopal Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to St. George's. The family will have a reception at St. George's after services.
